Cultivating History & Beauty: A Glimpse Into The Masterful Gardens Of The Truitt House

But first, the gardens…Brian, a master gardener, immediately started to envision plans for the property. His gardens seamlessly blend nature’s beauty and human artistry. With a passion to nurture the existing gardens at the Truitt House while still lending a creative touch, he has transformed the property into an oasis of vibrant colors and tranquil spaces.

The McCormallys’ intention to restore and continue to grow the legacy of the Truitt House is evident in every corner of the exterior. Brian commenced his vision by installing a rose garden, and then extended his plans to encompass a southern perennial garden that encircles the perimeter of the property. A breathtaking mixture of hundreds of hydrangeas, camellias, viburnum, and gardenias have been planted at every turn, showcasing a diverse variety of colors and styles.

A hosta and fern garden is sheltered beneath the property’s century-old oak tree. To infuse even more life and color into the garden, he meticulously populated over 90 large ceramic pots. Bursting with a variety of annuals, ferns, and vines, these pots color the garden with bright hues and also provide an endless supply of cut flowers for fresh arrangements inside the home. It adds an extra layer of meaning that all of these plants are grown and nurtured in the property’s own greenhouse—a testament to Brian’s dedication and knowledge of his craft.

But the garden’s draw isn't just found in its plants - it's also found in the original and new pathways and connections. Brian planted more than 200 arborvitae trees, and also reimagined both the front and back yard with new sod, creating inviting spaces where guests can gather. The passageway between the main house and carriage house has been covered with reblooming wisteria vines - a visual reminder of how nature can create a bridge between the outdoors and home.

At the heart of the gardens you’ll find the couple's personal favorite feature - the formal koi pond and waterfall, stocked with 22 beautiful Japanese koi. Over the years the McCormallys have actually moved their cherished collection of koi three times, ensuring they continue to thrive in their new environments - from Utah to their previous Virginia home and now to the Truitt House. The pond’s enclosure was designed to match the historical brick of the home, and the sounds of the fountain water feature lend the perfect backdrop to every garden tour.

The gardens at the Truitt House embody a blend of artistry, passion, and deep connection with the home’s history that continues to evolve and enchant. As the McCormallys’ plans for the gardens continue to expand, one thing is sure - they are creating the perfect visual representation of the growth taking place both in and around the home, while still reminding visitors of its rich past.
